Analysis of song "Head Over Feet"

"Head Over Feet"
By Alanis Morissette

I had no choice but to hear you
You stated your case time and again
I thought about it

You treat me like I'm a princess
I'm not used to liking that
You ask how my day was

You've already won me over in spite of me
And don't be alarmed if I fall head over feet
Don't be surprised if I love you for all that you are
I couldn't help it
It's all your fault

Your love is thick and it swallowed me whole
You're so much braver than I gave you credit for
That's not lip service

You've already won me over in spite of me
And don't be alarmed if I fall head over feet
Don't be surprised if I love you for all that you are
I couldn't help it
It's all your fault

You are the bearer of unconditional things
You held your breath and the door for me
Thanks for your patience

You're the best listener that I've ever met
You're my best friend
Best friend with benefits
What took me so long

I've never felt this healthy before
I've never wanted something rational
I am aware now
I am aware now

You've already won me over in spite of me
And don't be alarmed if I fall head over feet
Don't be surprised if I love you for all that you are
I couldn't help it
It's all your fault

Short Story "Gerald's Love"

Gerald's love
By Donna Suryaman

What on earth! Dave stole a couple at his buddy. Gerald. He was amazed to note the obvious change in his friend. Gerald's unruly mass of curly hair was finally tamed by (apparently) lost of hair wax. Dave could smell the fragrance emanating from Geralds body. From a mile away. As far as he could remember. Gerald always smelled like a mixture of sweat, grass, and a thing that he couldn't put a name on. It could be cow dung, but Dave couldn't be too sure since he never actually got the chance to sniff some anyway. Not that he would welcome the opportunity. But now Gerald smelled like a person who had somehow been forced to bathe in the combination of all kinds of essential oil.
“you haven't suddenly lost your mind, have you?” Dave asked Gerald accusingly. “perhaps,” Gerald answered laconically. “there's no other explanation, man!” Dave eyed Gerald critically. “look at you! Since when you discarded your comfortable sneakers, jeans, and t-shirt for this obsolete outfit? These should be kept in a museum; I'm sure the curator would be delighted”.
“I thought it would be appropriate,” Gerald stated defensively. “i thought it would make me look better.”
“hah! Say who?” snorted Dave, eyeing his friends critically. Gerald was wearing a neat checked shirt, spotless pants, and .... Heavens above! A pair of leather shoes. With matching sock. Oh, the horror! Dave honestly thought that Gerald should find work as a clown in a zoo. The animals would be delighted.
“at least my mother said so”. “since when you star to care about your mother's opinion?” Dave literally shrieked. He'd made plans to go to the mall, eyeing gils with Gerald. Now he couldn't bring himself to proceed with the original plan. No use looking cool and hip; the girl would probably think he was hanging out with a twerp. It just wouldn't do. He shook his head in frustration.
“since i fell in love...” with a faraway look in his eyes, Gerald put the palms of his hands on his chest.
Dave's eyes nearly popped out of their sockets. “Excuse me?” he asked, not trusting his hearing. “you fell in love? With who?”
“ I don't know her name. But I know she's the most beautiful woman I've ever seen”.
“And where did you meet this Helen of Tron?” Dave asked caustically.
“ i’ll tel! You if you come with me,” Gerald replied cryptically.
Burning with curiosity, Dave decided to follow his friend. Using the public transportation they when to a cafe near a reputable university. They ordered iced lemon tea and waited.
“i didn’t know you’ve been to this place”, Dave said in wonder. He still had no idea why his friend chose this particular cafe. He assumed that Gerald would tell him in his own good time.
“have you been here before?” Gerald asked with forced casualness.
“ of course i have,” Dave replied. “my mother teaches in that university. We sometimes eat here.”
Gerald eyes shone brighter than the sun in the midday sky. “maybe she’s  a student of your mother!” he exclaimed in delight. Dave, staring at his buddy, once again questioned Gerald’s sanity.
Gerald caught his eyes and flushed. “yes, I’m in love with a university student.”
Dave arched his eyebrows. “An older woman?” he groaned and put his face in his hands. “we haven’t even finished high school yet, and here you are talking nonchalantly about being in love with a university student.”
He managed to smile a little shaky smile. But his smile quickly turned to a frown, when the woman of his dream come to Dave and kissed him on the cheek. Jealousy flared inside him.
“But she’s so beautiful,” Gerald argued with a smile. “i first saw her here, Dave. It was by sheer chance i decided to drink at this cafe some time ago. She was here, drinking her cup of cafe, leafing through pages and pages of... i don’t know, maybe her paper?” she was perfect, man! She’s elegant and chic....”
“is that why you decide to quit being a slob and be Mr. Well-dressed?” Dave cut Gerald’s narration with annoyance.
“... you’ll be able to see for yourself. It’s Friday now. Any minute now she’d come out of the campus, looking as cool as the morning dew,” Gerald went on with his story, completely unfazed.
Dave felt as if he was talking to a brick wall. Gerald was obviously infatuated. All right then, he thought to himself, I’d better take a look at this woman. I’m sure Gerald will be heartbroken soon, but who knows....
“what are you planning to do now?” Dave inquired, sipping his tea. After all, Gerald was the best friend he had. He wanted to help in any way that he could. “are you going to ask her out?”
“As a matter of fact i am. I’m trying to find a way to get to know her better. Would you help?” Gerald looked at Dave anxiously.
Dave nodded with lack of enthusiasm.
“but promise me first: you’ll never take her away from me!”
Dave burst into a peal of laughter. “why did you thing I’d do that?” he managed to ask after a while.
“every girl seems to be drawn to you. Not this one, i hope. She’s mine!” Gerald said this so fiercely that Dave almost laughed again. Yet, seeing Gerald’s serious face, Dave restrained himself.
“We’ll see, Gerry my man, we’ll see. And now, let’s make a toast for this love of your life!” Dave raised his glass of iced lemon tea and Gerald did the same. “may your dream girl be yours!” Dave exclaimed.
“amen, brother.” Gerald solemnly made the toast.
“here she comes,” Gerald whispered, his voice betraying his nervousness.
Dave turned around to see and found a familiar face smiling at him.
Surely it was a mistake... it must be. Dave’s  thought was  in turmoil. He wanted to say something but he couldn’t, even when he saw impending doom coming their way.
The beautiful woman sauntered toward Dave and Gerald. Gerald couldn’t believe his luck. Could it be that woman was in love with him too? The thought made him blush. He managed to smile a little shaky smile. But his smile quickly turned to a frown, when the woman of his dream came to Dave and kissed him on the cheek. Jealousy flared inside him.
Dave obviously knew this woman! Why didn’t he introduce Gerald to her? Did he want to keep this gorgeous woman to himself? Gerald hated Dave intensely at that moment. He felt betrayed. Dave mocked him for falling in love with a university student. And here he was, obviously in a secure relationship with one!
Gerald was about to get up and storm out when Dave signaled for him to stay.
Dave turned to the woman and said simply, “mom, this is my friend Gerry. Gerry meet my mother.”
Gerald’s world collapsed into darkness at that point.

A Question for Mom
The party ended at midnight. Jon left Bisnar in the parking lot with his white Corolla. Jon wondered whether Bisnar was in a condition to drive. Jon was worried about Bisnar because he had seen Bisnar drink a couple of drink a couple of drinks.
Jon started his red Starlet after he was sure  that Bisnar was okay. Suddenly he heard a loud bang and a great thud, and then the road in front of his  car was crowded by people who were screaming and shouting . Jon ran over, to see what had happened. There was an accident.
A moment later an ambulance and a police  car arrived at the scene. The paramedics tried to help but they were too late. On the other side, the police tried to keep the situation under control, including putting a police line around the area where the accident  had happened. Jon got closer and closer. When  he was near, he could see the body, lying on the pavement.
Suddenly, he caught sight of something. The silhouette of a body so familiar to him. But he couldn’t remember who it belonged to.
Then, the paramedics brought the body to the ambulance, now, he could clearly see it. He remember whose body it was. The body belonged to... himself.
I went to a party mom, i remember what you have said. You told me not to drink, mom, so i drank soda instead.
I really felt proud inside, mom, and the way your said i would. I didn’t drink and drive, mom, even though the other said i should.
I know i did the right thing, mom, i know you are always right. Ow the party is finally ended, mom, as everyone is driving out of sight.
As i got into my car, mom, i knew I’d get in in one  piece. Because of the way you raised me, so responsible and sweet.
I started to drive away, mom, but as i pulled out into the road, the other car didn’t see me, mom, and hit me like a load.
As i lay there on the pavement, mom, i hear the polici say, “the other guy is drunk, mom. “and now I’m the one who will pay.
I’m lying here dying, mom... i wish you’d get here soon. How could this happen to me, mom?  My life just burst like a balloon.
There is blood all around me, mom, and most of it is mine. I hear the medic say, mom, I'll die in a short time.
I just want to tell you, mom, i swear i didn’t drink. It was the other guy, mom. The other didn’t think. He was probably at the same party as i.
The only difference is, he drank and i will die. Why do people drink, mom? I can ruin their whole life. I’m feeling sharp pains now. Pains just like a knife.
The guy who hit me is walking, mom, and i don’t  think it’s fair. I’m lying here dying and all he can do is stare.
Tell my brother not to cry, mom. Tell daddy to be brave.
And when i go to heaven, mom put “mommy’s boy” on my grave.
Someone should tell him, mom, not to drink and drive. If only they had told him, mom, I would still be alive. My breath is getting shorter, mom.
I’m becoming very scared. Please don’t cry for me, mom.
When i needed you, you were always there. I have one last question, mom, before saying good bye.. I didn’t drink and drive, so why am i the one to die?
